The solar eclipse of August 21, 2017 was a total eclipse visible within a band across the entire contiguous United States, passing from the Pacific to the Atlantic coasts. As a partial solar eclipse, it was visible on land from Nunavut in northern Canada to as far south as northern South America. The United States Postal Service issued the Total Eclipse of the Sun Forever stamp on June 20th. This is the first U.S. stamp application of thermochromic ink. By rubbing a thumb or finger on the eclipse image, the heat thereby imparted to it will cause an underlying image of the full moon to be revealed. Afterward, the image reverts back to the eclipse as it cools.

I visited Forteiland Pampus with the family, a day-trip to this tiny island that is part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam. The fort was built between 1887 and 1897 to defend Amsterdam against an attack from the river IJ. The vast quantities of material were delivered by ship out of Amsterdam. A German Company built the steel gun turrets. The whole Defense Line of Amsterdam ("Stelling van Amsterdam" in Dutch) was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. It is a 135 km long ring of fortifications around Amsterdam, consisting of 42 forts located between 10 and 15 kilometers from the centre, and lowlands that can easily be flooded in time of war. On the island it is possible to buy and mail postcards with matching stamps depicting the site itself.

On 21st November 1916 the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I died of pneumonia in Schönbrunn Palace. He reached the age of 86 and reigned for almost 68 years. The subject for the commemorative stamp to celebrate the 100th anniversary of his death is taken from one of the jubilee stamps designed by Koloman Moser in 1908 to celebrate 60 years of the Emperor’s reign. On the front of the postcard he is depicted with his wife Elisabeth of Bavaria, commonly known as Sisi,

Miffy's original name is Nijntje and this character is so famous all over the world that has her own museum in Utrecht (www.nijntjemuseum.nl), which is perfect for toddlers and children. The front of the card shows a picture of Jupiter taken from the Hubble telescope (ESA). The dark smudge at bottom right is debris from a comet or asteroid that plunged into Jupiter's atmosphere and disintegrated. In addition to the fresh impact, the image reveals a spectacular variety of shapes in the swirling atmosphere of Jupiter. The stamps were issued in 2007 by AnPost as part of the series dedicated to the "Planets". The stamps are special elongated stamps and are based on photographic images of Jupiter and Neptune. The other two stamps of the same series show Saturn and Uranus.

Belgian national dish “les frites’ was wrongly given the name ‘French Fries’ by American servicemen when they arrived in Belgium at the end of the First World War. They named the fries after the French language spoken in Wallonia creating confusion with the invention’s nationality. “Les frites” are part of Belgium’s gastronomic and cultural heritage. There are frites stalls everywhere while visiting this country.

The card is an artwork by Penny Bean titled "Butterfly on Green". The stamp was issued in 2012 by BPost and represents an Old World swallowtail butterfly (Papilio machaon), also known as common yellow swallowtail or simply the swallowtail. Its Latin name "machaon" is after the Physician Machaon, who belongs to the Greek mithology and led an army from Thessaly in the Trojan War on the side of the Greeks.

The Nothern Lights flame in the frost nights on the northern hemisphere and they are visible on roughly 200 nights a year in Finnish Lapland. The traditional ways to go Aurora spotting are snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or snowmobile and sled dog touring. Issued in 2009 by Finnish Post, the stamps are self-adhesive and they feature views of the northern lights as well an aurora borealis crown. The stamps also bear map coordinates indicating the location at which they were shot.

The front of the card shows the propaganda leaflet dropped over Vienna in 1918 by nationalist patriot and poet Gabriele d'Annunzio. The text reads:

"VIENNESE!
Learn to know the Italians.
We are flying over Vienna; we could drop tons of bombs. All we are
dropping on you is a greeting of three colors: the three colors of
liberty.
We Italians do not make war on children, on old people, on women.
We are making war on your government, the enemy of national liberties,
on your blind, stubborn, cruel government that can give you neither
peace nor bread, and feeds you hatred and illusions.

VIENNESE!
You are famous for being intelligent. But why have you put on the
Prussian uniform? By now, you see, the whole world has turned against
you.
You want to continue the war? Continue it; it's your suicide. What do
you hope for? The decisive victory promised to you by the Prussian
generals? Their decisive victory is like the bread of Ukraine: You die
waiting for it.
PEOPLE OF VIENNA, think of your own fates. Wake up!
LONG LIVE LIBERTY!
LONG LIVE ITALY!

LONG LIVE THE ENTENTE!"

There are more than 3000 cherry trees that bloom all over Washington DC each spring and many tourists come to see them every year during the National Cherry Blossom Festival. The trees were a gift from the Japanese government in 1912 as a gift of friendship to the people of the United States. The two stamps, showing a panoramic view of the trees in blossom, were issued in 2012 by the US Postal Service and commemorated the centennial of that gift. The stamp on the left shows the Washington Monument in the background, while the Jefferson Memorial is shown on the stamp to the right.
